A Quick Stripy Quilt Back from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Piecing a Scrappy Back for the Hope’s Path Quilt

Sometimes quilting projects don’t go as planned—like when I completely forgot to order backing for the Hope’s Path Quilt. This is a quilt that is so is special to me. I share the rights with Quilts for a Cause. An organization that raises money to combat cancer by selling quilts. I was working under a tight, self imposed deadline. While it might sound stressful, it turned into an unexpected creative opportunity!

Why? Well, I decided to piece together a Snazzy Stripy Quilt Back made solely from my ...

Learning to Make My First Quilt: A Newbie’s Journey from Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber

Quilting can sometimes look so easy, especially when watching and reading about everything at Fat Quarter Shop. It can’t be as easy as it seams, or is it? I’m Marissa, and I write many blog posts for Fat Quarter Shop. I’m new to quilting (but not sewing!), and I wanted to invite you on my journey as I sew my first quilt.

I hope that other new quilters can learn from and relate to my experiences. For everyone who’s been quilting longer than me, I hope you can find my adventure entertaining (but not too much ...

Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Heart Pillow from Tea Rose Home

Today marks my 3rd mastectomy anniversary. If you are interested you can read about it in my blog post after when I was diagnosed, the day of the mastectomy and the day I came home from the hospital.

I reflected on the past three years and the main thing that comes to my mind is that how grateful I am. I woke up this morning, got ready, went to church and later that day I was able to Facetime my sons who are both serving our church in Japan. I was able to cook and had dinner with my family ...

Terracotta Fiori Quilt – A Sneak Peak from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Dreaming in Sea Glass

Currently, I’m pretending I’m at the beach. Baking in the sun, enjoying the birds as they dance with the waves, breathing in the salty air, thinking about the Terracotta Fiori quilt, and searching for shells as I trek across the sandy shore.

That is where this quilt is taking me… That is what I channeled every time I took a stitch.

Garden Star Four Quilt Pattern from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

I love color!!  I have had a few different favorites throughout my life.  Hunter green.  Purple.  Teal.  Pink.  With each color I fall in love with I simply add it to my pallet, still loving all the colors that came before it.  When I was in college (and many years after it) I went through a purple phase.  Purple was the color in my wedding.  I had deep purple calla lilies and light purple bridesmaid dresses.  I made all the centerpieces for all of the tables.  They started out clear glass vases from Joann’s.  I cut and glued skinny ...

Chess Board Quilt Tutorial from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

A couple months back I watched The Queen’s Gambit on netflix. It’s an excellent mini series that opens up the world of chess and sheds light on how it functioned in the ’60s. It is created from the pages of a novel by Walter Tevis written in 1983 also titled The Queen’s Gambit.

Chess is something that I have never played. I love the checkerboard and all of the pieces that go with the board, like the knights, king, and queen. But no one has ever explained the game to me. The mini series has inspired me ...

Oh Happy Hay Fabric by Sandy Gervais from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

I am sew excited to be working with a new line from Riley Blake Designs. Sandy Gervais is the creator of this whimsical line of Oh Happy Day fabric. This line was inspired by Sandy’s love for sunny days, “The bright sunny colors make me happy!” It features reds, yellows, blues, and greens. The way that those colors pop with the dark black background is perfect! An example of this is the main print. The line is bright and cheerful with inspirational quotes and is full of texture.

The Farmers Market bag – DIY from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

We have stepped into fall here in Tucson and the mornings are so nice. This year, life has been truly altering and there are so many things that I miss doing. I love Farmers Markets! On Saturdays when I can find time to run, I like to park at the Farmers Market so I can check out a few booths and get a little exercise in. All before I start sewing. These cooler days have me wanting to get out and about, so I made the perfect bag to take shopping as soon as I am mentally ready to get ...
